ABOUT VOLUNTEERING IN AFRICA!

In Africa we have great opportunities for volunteer projects suitable for, those on a gap year and others that offer to travel just to volunteer. Some volunteering opportunities in Africa require volunteers to be trained in certain fields such as medicine, education, or emergency rescue, while others are on need basis, such as in response to a natural disaster, others do not require skills at all.

There are different categories of Volunteering opportunities in Africa which are; working with orphanages/ children’s homes (Social Care), health care, community development, teaching, biodiversity conservation,  All these can be customized to suit the needs of the volunteer keen to volunteer their time in Africa.

Working with children in Africa is rewarding since it makes great difference in them. The children in the Kenyan orphanages are mostly orphaned while others are less fortunate with traumatising backgrounds. The volunteers who love children support them by teaching, playing, guidance and counselling and taking care of them. Such volunteers are the best to work in the Kenyan orphanages as they will also offer to help in other tasks such as feeding and clothing the children.

The volunteers in this field have an opportunity to change lives of the sick and less fortunate in Kenya. They are offered responsibilities depending on their medical qualifications. Those volunteers in volunteering in non-medical areas do not require medical training.  For the volunteer students still pursuing their courses are placed under qualified supervisors. These volunteers assist in distributing relief food to famine stricken areas and teach on nutrition, create awareness on contagious diseases like HIV/AIDS, T.B and disease outbreaks like cholera and teach on the preventive measures.

In this category, the volunteers participate in African projects that help in impacting the community positively and they impact the life of the volunteer positively too. This program helps the volunteer connect with the Africa communities and hence learning more on the Kenyan tradition and culture, also enjoy the local Kenyan foods. The Community development volunteering program will help the Kenyan community raise their living standards. These Volunteering projects are aimed at addressing the problem facing the community hence making a difference by improving various aspects of their livelihoods and promoting sustainable developments in Africa by volunteering projects such as construction, cultural conservation and women and youth empowerment.

Volunteering as a teacher or a mentor in Africa gives one an opportunity to sharpen their skills in their academic career. Particularly in the rural areas in Africa both primary and secondary schools are understaffed and they struggle to give quality education to Kenyan students. Mostly, the volunteer will work alongside a local African teacher and in so doing, help the Kenyan children attain their goals and also perform well. The subjects can be optional depending on the volunteer’s wish like English, Mathematics, Arts, Sciences, Music, extra curriculum activities, and career guidance among others. Environmental education is essential as it creates awareness and hence conservation of the natural resources in Kenya. By volunteering as a teacher in Kenya, it can be exercised as one giving back to the community.

Kenyan vegetation varies depending on the climate and the altitude. The biodiversity conservation volunteering programs allow volunteers to engage in Africa projects which are set to conserve bio-diversity and benefit local Africa communities through community based conservation. This promotes a harmonious relationship between locals and the wildlife, hence decreasing the human – wildlife conflicts in Africa. Environmental education is essential for it has positive impact where the locals are taught on how to plant trees, clean the parks. It creates awareness to the locals in Africa and they are able to protect and appreciate the natural resources in their locality while they enjoy reaping from the benefits.

Wildlife and conservation programs in Africa allow wildlife volunteers to engage in projects which are set to conserve wildlife, especially big mammals such as elephants, lions, giraffes, buffalos etc and benefit local communities through community based conservation. These self-help groups can earn direct returns from accommodating wildlife and natural.
